The Louisiana State University (LSU) Radiation Safety Office will offer a five-day course entitled Selected Topics in Radiological Protection, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The registration fee of $1,250 includes the textbook and other instructional materials. Vehicle parking is included in the registration fee. Upon request, we will apply for recognition from certifying or licensing bodies for this course. The objective of the course is to present the basic principles of radiation safety to engineers, scientists, managers, and other technical personnel. An educational background equivalent to a B.S. degree in science or engineering, or a high school diploma with several years of experience in a technical area should be sufficient as a prerequisite for this course. The use of advanced mathematics will be minimized since the emphasis of the course will be on solutions to practical problems. The course was originally developed by Dr. John C. Courtney and sponsored by the LSU Radiation Safety Office beginning in 1973. Dr. Courtney retired in 1998 and died from cancer in November of 2002. Dr. L. Max Scott (Board Certified Health Physicist), LSU System's Radiation Safety Officer and Adjunct Associate Professor of Physics, has administered and presented significant portions of the course for the past 20 years and will continue to provide assistance for the short course. Generally the course is given annually in the Center for Energy Studies on LSU’s Baton Rouge campus, beginning at 8:00 a.m. on a designated Monday in early December. Formal instruction will end around 11:30 a.m. that Friday. Faculty will be available that afternoon for informal discussions. To provide maximum effectiveness in instruction, the class size is restricted to twenty students. The quota will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional information may be obtained by contacting the Radiation Safety Office by e-mail or by phone at (225) 578-2008. Please write, telephone, fax, or e-mail as soon as possible if you would like to attend.Download the course schedule here. Download the short course registration form here.
